You Can Find Gold With A Metal Detector

You’ve probably seen the advertisements or read magazine articles and even news reports about someone with a metal detector finding a large gold nugget. Then, they sold the nugget and made a fortune. But before you go out and buy a gold metal detector, take a deep breath.

It Can be hard but it’s worth the effort.

Anyone can find gold with a metal detector. But it takes the right kind of person to go out in the wilds with a metal detector to consistently find gold day in and day out. You have to be willing to fend off snakes, angry bears and bee’s. Everything out there will either bite you, stick you or sting you. This person that does this doesn’t mind how he or she looks to others and usually is eager to show how their metal detector to find gold works. But they usually take lonely paths in out of the way places and often have a solitary day out in the wilds with only a metal detector for company. This person needs lots of patience, a love of the outdoors and a good sense of humor.

A Hobby?

Although metal detecting is often called a hobby, there are those in the hobby who insist on calling it a sport. The vast majority of players in sports will never get to the professional leagues. And yet, that doesn’t stop people playing those individual and team sports, because they love the game. It’s the same way with using a metal detector to find gold or other valuable metals.

A decent used metal detector for hunting gold will run you a few hundred dollars. A new one from around $800.00 to almost $5000.00. You also need comfortable boots, snake leggings possibly, gloves, digging utensils, transportation and batteries for your metal detector. You also need time places to go. This is not something that you can do just for a few minutes a day. Learning to use your metal detector to find gold is a skill that needs to be learned over some time.

When you add all of this up, it can run you into thousands of dollars. So, you better be sure that you enjoy the sport for the pure love of the game before you begin to play.

Gold Fever Is Catching

I love it and many others do too! Your first gold nugget and you are hooked.

My advice is to start with a detector costing no more than around a thousand dollars. If you like it or find the gold you can easily upgrade.

Hooray! Your new gold metal detector has arrived! More and more people get their metal detectors through online websites, but there are plenty of others who still travel to bricks and mortar buildings and buy new gold metal detectors and all of the other equipment that they need. You may want to rush right out to the beach or park to try out your new gold metal detector, but you need to get used to it first.

How Does It Work?

A metal detector can sense metallic objects buried in the ground. Gold is certainly a metallic material, metal detectors can be used to find gold nuggets. In the last 20 years, detecting for nuggets has become a very fast-growing aspect of the prospecting world. Several companies have developed metal detectors specifically optimized to find nuggets.

The old time prospectors who searched for gold decades ago, never had any piece of equipment remotely like a metal detector.

Which Detector Is The Best

There are many varieties of metal detectors with technologies and features designed for certain characteristics and certain types of uses. All of the technologies currently in use work by putting electrical energy into a coil which creates a magnetic field and then sensing the response of a metallic object to that magnetic field.

Everyone wants to know “which one is best”? This is not a simple question and the answer depends on your finances and what you intend to do with your metal detector. When considering what detector to buy it is important to consider what type of detecting you want to do. If you plan to only detect for nuggets once in a while, you probably will be most interested in a Tesoro Lobo, Fisher Gold Bug, one of the cheaper Minelabs or a Garrett Gold Scorpion. All of these are available for around $800.00 except the Minelab.

If your serious and have the time to spend then a Minelab or Garrett Infinium which are pulse induction detectors are the way to go. The cost is around $4500 and $1100 respectively.

A good rule of thumb is the more you pay the deeper it goes and the more able it is to detect smaller gold and work in highly mineralized soil where most of the gold will be found. Keep in mind you can find gold with almost any metal detector under certain circumstances.

The Learning Process

Gold nugget hunting with a detector is a skill that does not come instinctively to the human species. You have to go through a learning process. You need to learn how to use the equipment and stay comfortable. Comfort is imperative because when hunting for gold nuggets long hours of use lay ahead.

Read The Instructions

Read the instructions and put all of the parts of your new gold metal detector together in the comfort and relative privacy of your home. It does take a little while to figure out where all of the wires go. Take the battery or batteries in and out to be sure you can change the battery easily when needed. If it’s not easy to change the batteries, then consider returning your new gold metal detector to the store and get one that does.

Trail Run

After you’ve hooked everything up and turn everything on, pick up your new gold metal detector and walk around the room with it. You may discover that you keep accidentally bumping it against the floor or raise it far too high over the floor for it to be effective. In time, you’ll discover the right height off of the ground to smoothly wave it over.

You also need to do some metal detecting to be sure your new gold metal detector actually detects metal. Drop a few coins on the floor and pass the new gold metal detector over them. You should hear a beep or get some other obvious signal that your device has picked up metal. If not, then you know that you have to take your new toy back to the shop.

Get some small nuggets or lead and I mean small and glue these to cards and start testing and learn what your detector is trying to tell you.

It’s much better to get used to your new metal detector in your home where you can act like a fool than outside on the trail where everyone can see you.

Fisher Gold Strike

Fisher Gold Strike

If you are looking for Fisher Gold Strike Metal Detector then you are in the right place.

My neighbor has a Fisher Gold Strike. This detector was well liked a few years ago when it first came out… then Fisher mysteriously quit manufacturing it and now only makes the Gold Bug 2.

I have heard of no one who didn’t like this detector. It looks a lot like the CZ7 with the flat surface push button controls.

This 30 kHz detector is the first Fisher to provide operators with a constant control readout. It boasts a digital LCD display, fast automatic ground balancing, two-tone ID system, advanced digital signal processing, and a 10.5” elliptical coil. Some of the other exciting features include; an automatic low battery warning, an automatic signal overload warning, F.A.C.T. (alerts the operator when the coil is not properly installed), 3 memory locations to store your favorite settings, and an LCD backlight for hunting in low-light situations.

I don’t know why Fisher discontinued this detector I was out in the feild with another $1000 gold detector I noticed the Gold$trike was much more sensitive to smaller pieces of gold and other metals, also it has the ability to reject hot rocks and detect gold underneath them where my other gold detector does not, this is almost cutting edge for its ability to detect very very small pieces of gold!! Once you learn how it behaves in black sand and how to set it up properly for mineralized soil it works very well.

Overall this is a very good prospecting detector. To bad it’s no longer made. This is a link to the manual – Gold Strike Manual

See Garrett Metal Detectors Below

I recently read a well known book on metal detectors… here’s my review of this book-

The authors have so much enthusiasm for their topic that I truly wanted to write a positive review, but unfortunately their enthusiasm is the only redeeming quality of the book. True, you can learn some things about searching for gold with a metal detector. And although the authors disclaim any purpose to sell their products, they refer to them exclusively on the grounds that they are most familiar with them. Well, OK, but it still has an uncomfortable feel to it. And I felt I was unable to translate many of their instructions to generic terms (for use with any brand metal detector).

Early on you are advised that terms are defined in the glossary. But they should also be defined in the text so that one does not have to continually stop reading and refer to the glossary. This is basic to didactic writing. For example, the term “placer” is used many times before it is defined. Ground balancing (canceling) is treated the same way.

There are several passages that are repeated verbatim in different chapters and you are left wondering if you have somehow read the current chapter already! It appears that the editor of the book was in a great rush, or extremely inexperienced. I could not find any reference to RAM publications on the web. The editor was found, and seems to be mostly associated with the works of Garret and Lagal.

Was it worth the price? I suppose, as I at least felt the excitement of hunting for gold. But it would be better titled as a companion to one of the Garret manufactured metal detectors. I still hope to find a book on using the metal detector as a hobby that is a better-written “how to” book that speaks in generic terms about metal detectors. This is a great book if your using a Garrett Metal Detector.

A gold metal detector can do more than uncover precious metals they can also be used to find coins as well or any other kind of metal. Gold metal detectors are among the most sought-after metal detectors and are not made to work in areas that have a lot of trash like pull tabs.

Not even the best Gold metal detector will be able to properly function in some conditions where you have a lot of trash. For that you want a coin detector with a good discrimination circuit. For example, seawater or saltwater can interfere with the electromagnetic field generator pattern. (That’s a fancy term for what the Precision Gold metal detector uses to help find good metal stuff). If the metal objects have been buried more than six or seven inches deep underground, then that could be too deep for the Precision Gold metal detector.

Almost any metal detector can detect gold but one designed for this operation like the Fisher Gold Bug.

The Gold bug while not cheap is inexpensive compared to the top of the line minelab at over $4000.00

Fisher metal detectors have been around for a very long time. The Gold Bug is one of the most popular gold prospecting detectors on the market. The Gold Bug is so popular for a very good reason it sniffs out the gold.

All credible reviewers who analyze and rate these products choose the Gold Bug Detector. Some of them cover the Gold Bug Detector in lengthy and well-detailed non-comparative reviews. Here are some links for Gold Bug Detector that contain comments from these reviewers.

The Fisher Gold Bug has been updated and replaced with the Gold Bug II. http://www.fisherlab.com/hobby/GoldBug2.htm

The Fisher Gold Bug 2… extraordinary sensitivity, ultra-high 71kHz operating frequency, iron discrimination, dust and moisture resistance, audio boost and the ability to operate in highly mineralized soil. Using low-noise, precision-matched, temperature-compensated components and state-of-the-art circuitry, the Gold Bug 2 takes prospecting to a new level – 71kHz – the highest operating frequency on the market. The result: increased sensitivity to smaller nuggets in highly mineralized soil.

+ Powerful 71 kHz operation for extreme sensitivity to small gold nuggets

+ “IRON DISC” mode for hot rocks and iron discrimination

+ Three auto-tune modes with two retune speeds for nugget hunting in almost any ground condition

+ Conceived, designed, engineered and manufactured specifically for today’s electronic prospector

+ Standard 10 inch waterproof elliptical search coil. Optional 6.5 and 14 inch coils

+ Sealed panel and speaker design for dust and moisture resistance

+ Faint-target, audio-boost mode

+ Uses two 9V batteries

+ Only 2.9 lbs. complete with foam grip and cushioned arm rest

+ Converts to hipmount or chestmount
