You Can Find Gold With A Metal Detector

You’ve probably seen the advertisements or read magazine articles and even news reports about someone with a metal detector finding a large gold nugget. Then, they sold the nugget and made a fortune. But before you go out and buy a gold metal detector, take a deep breath.

It Can be hard but it’s worth the effort.

Anyone can find gold with a metal detector. But it takes the right kind of person to go out in the wilds with a metal detector to consistently find gold day in and day out. You have to be willing to fend off snakes, angry bears and bee’s. Everything out there will either bite you, stick you or sting you. This person that does this doesn’t mind how he or she looks to others and usually is eager to show how their metal detector to find gold works. But they usually take lonely paths in out of the way places and often have a solitary day out in the wilds with only a metal detector for company. This person needs lots of patience, a love of the outdoors and a good sense of humor.

A Hobby?

Although metal detecting is often called a hobby, there are those in the hobby who insist on calling it a sport. The vast majority of players in sports will never get to the professional leagues. And yet, that doesn’t stop people playing those individual and team sports, because they love the game. It’s the same way with using a metal detector to find gold or other valuable metals.

A decent used metal detector for hunting gold will run you a few hundred dollars. A new one from around $800.00 to almost $5000.00. You also need comfortable boots, snake leggings possibly, gloves, digging utensils, transportation and batteries for your metal detector. You also need time places to go. This is not something that you can do just for a few minutes a day. Learning to use your metal detector to find gold is a skill that needs to be learned over some time.

When you add all of this up, it can run you into thousands of dollars. So, you better be sure that you enjoy the sport for the pure love of the game before you begin to play.

Gold Fever Is Catching

I love it and many others do too! Your first gold nugget and you are hooked.

My advice is to start with a detector costing no more than around a thousand dollars. If you like it or find the gold you can easily upgrade.

Hooray! Your new gold metal detector has arrived! More and more people get their metal detectors through online websites, but there are plenty of others who still travel to bricks and mortar buildings and buy new gold metal detectors and all of the other equipment that they need. You may want to rush right out to the beach or park to try out your new gold metal detector, but you need to get used to it first.

How Does It Work?

A metal detector can sense metallic objects buried in the ground. Gold is certainly a metallic material, metal detectors can be used to find gold nuggets. In the last 20 years, detecting for nuggets has become a very fast-growing aspect of the prospecting world. Several companies have developed metal detectors specifically optimized to find nuggets.

The old time prospectors who searched for gold decades ago, never had any piece of equipment remotely like a metal detector.

Which Detector Is The Best

There are many varieties of metal detectors with technologies and features designed for certain characteristics and certain types of uses. All of the technologies currently in use work by putting electrical energy into a coil which creates a magnetic field and then sensing the response of a metallic object to that magnetic field.

Everyone wants to know “which one is best”? This is not a simple question and the answer depends on your finances and what you intend to do with your metal detector. When considering what detector to buy it is important to consider what type of detecting you want to do. If you plan to only detect for nuggets once in a while, you probably will be most interested in a Tesoro Lobo, Fisher Gold Bug, one of the cheaper Minelabs or a Garrett Gold Scorpion. All of these are available for around $800.00 except the Minelab.

If your serious and have the time to spend then a Minelab or Garrett Infinium which are pulse induction detectors are the way to go. The cost is around $4500 and $1100 respectively.

A good rule of thumb is the more you pay the deeper it goes and the more able it is to detect smaller gold and work in highly mineralized soil where most of the gold will be found. Keep in mind you can find gold with almost any metal detector under certain circumstances.

The Learning Process

Gold nugget hunting with a detector is a skill that does not come instinctively to the human species. You have to go through a learning process. You need to learn how to use the equipment and stay comfortable. Comfort is imperative because when hunting for gold nuggets long hours of use lay ahead.

Read The Instructions

Read the instructions and put all of the parts of your new gold metal detector together in the comfort and relative privacy of your home. It does take a little while to figure out where all of the wires go. Take the battery or batteries in and out to be sure you can change the battery easily when needed. If it’s not easy to change the batteries, then consider returning your new gold metal detector to the store and get one that does.

Trail Run

After you’ve hooked everything up and turn everything on, pick up your new gold metal detector and walk around the room with it. You may discover that you keep accidentally bumping it against the floor or raise it far too high over the floor for it to be effective. In time, you’ll discover the right height off of the ground to smoothly wave it over.

You also need to do some metal detecting to be sure your new gold metal detector actually detects metal. Drop a few coins on the floor and pass the new gold metal detector over them. You should hear a beep or get some other obvious signal that your device has picked up metal. If not, then you know that you have to take your new toy back to the shop.

Get some small nuggets or lead and I mean small and glue these to cards and start testing and learn what your detector is trying to tell you.

It’s much better to get used to your new metal detector in your home where you can act like a fool than outside on the trail where everyone can see you.

If you are new to metal detecting or an experienced veteran looking to get some extreme value on a metal detector, the White Metal Detector Prizm V is the one for you. I am going to take an in depth look at the White Metal Detector Prizm V so that you can see the host of features it has and why it is such a great value for you. There are many different things that not only separate the White Metal Detector Prizm V from the rest of the field, but from the White Spectrum Metal Detectors as well.

Why Prizm V Has So Many Happy Users

The White Metal Detector Prizm V features a multitone system that lets you hear instantly whether it is a nail, a ring, or a quarter. The unit has 8 distinct audio tones for each zone that range from very low for nails to very high for silver dollars. To engage this feature just press the multitone button and listen as the White Metal Detector Prizm V tells you what you have hit.

It also has voltage controlled oscillation that will give off a higher pitch as you approach the target. This method is a simple and easy way to pinpoint what you are looking for. You can also disengage this for the traditional volume pinpointing if you prefer.

The White Metal Detector Prizm V features a 950 search coil which is the coil that is standard on all of White’s top of the line search detectors. You can read about this part extensively on White’s website as it is at the core of why their detectors are so popular.

There also is a smart notch feature that lets push a button to filter out certain frequencies. This is very handy if you are in area that has a ton of false positives. You can notch out different zones based on your discrimination setting and after playing with a little bit you will be able to see how truly wonderful this feature is.

The thing that really separates the White Metal Detector Prizm V from the rest of the field though is its price. With manufacturers suggested retail price of $450 you get one heck of a metal detector for about half of what you pay on other websites. White is not some fly by night seat of the pants company, they are an industry leader in the field of metal detection manufacturing and the Prizm is the most product for the least amount of money.

Used Metal Detectors Reviews -
Whites Coinmaster 2900D Trooper

2900D -1

This is a great little detector. This is a picture of my treasure. There was some trash dug – {one large piece of iron at 6 inches, crushed aluminum can and other large pieces of aluminum} as well as 56 cents in coins. One quarter, 3 dimes and a zinc penny. All this in around 25 minutes of very casual hunting.

Since I own one of these I thought I would give you a review of this detector. I had given this detector to my father many years ago for a Christmas present. He really did like it but it wasn’t used a lot. Retirement seemed to keep he and mom traveling in their Rv with little time to use his detector.

The 2900 D as for as I can tell is the same as the 3000D less the meter. I belive White’s calls it a 2900 S3

This past weekend the weather was damp and hot here on the gulf coast of Texas but cooler than it had been in quite sometime so I was thinking about dad and decided me and the 2900D should get reacquainted again.

The 2900 is dead simple to operate. It has 4 control knobs. Each control knob has a (P) Preset marking. Just turn on set and go basically. The four knobs are Tune (sensitivity) , ground balance, discrimination, and a combination volume and on off switch. It uses a single 9volt battery with a low battery indicator light. There is room for a spare battery also. Few inexpensive detectors have a manual ground balance which can come in very handy in some parts of the country. Although the change in volume and sound can help determine whether the target is good or bad it is not as good as say a Tesoro. Using iron discrimination only I have found it to be very good at ignoring small iron and pick up a nickel close by. Some detectors have problems with this.

It also has a Retune button located on the end of the handle. This will retune the detector after changing settings and can also be used to help with pinpointing.

This is another simple inexpensive detector from the early 1980’s that will find just as much or more as a new $500.00 detector. The only difference is you will have to set the discrimination low to keep from loosing rings and nickels and dig more trash. But that’s mostly true with a $500.00 detector also.

You can see the instruction manual here: 2900 D S3 http://media.whiteselectronics.com/manuals/Coinmaster%20Manuals/CM%202900%20S3%20Instruction%20Manual.pdf

I have used metal detectors for some years and needed a backup when I purchased this used metal detector off Ebay. I was pleased to find that with a little work it performs nearly as well as my main detector that cost in excess of $900. The specs given with the product are understated as the unit performs better than that in most situations. Perhaps the maker was honest enough to quote specs at the lowest possible end to allow for manufacturing variability. Either way, it is a keeper.

Have you ever fantasized about finding buried treasure in your backyard, on the beach or while just walking down the road? How do we really know what’s buried beneath our feet? What if there’s riches underneath us right now? There’s only one way to find out. First, you should learn how to use a metal detector. That’s right. Metal detectors are a great way to uncover that which we cannot see. You really don’t know what you’ll find until you begin looking. You just have to get your hands on a metal detector. There’s no reason, though, to spend a lot of money on one. You can always get a used metal detector; until you become accustomed to using one, and hopefully after you’ve already found a good amount of buried treasure.

If your new to metal detecting starting off with a used detector can save you a lot of money or it can cause you a lot of headaches. Stick to a name brand detector Fisher, Whites, Tesoro, Bounty Hunter or Garrett. You can find lots of free helpful advice online for these models.

Best Used Metal Detector Sources

One way to go about getting a good used metal detector is at a pawn shop. Pawn shops are notorious for having these sorts of items. It should only take a few minutes to call around to the various pawn shops in your area to see if they have used metal detectors. If you can’t find them at the local pawn shops, try the internet. There are many online resources you can try to find used metal detectors. You can try free classified ad sites such as Craigslist.org, you can try Ebay, or any of the other online auction sites. Once you get your hands on a used metal detector, you just have to become proficient in using one and then you can get to hunting.

See Garrett Metal Detectors Below

I recently read a well known book on metal detectors… here’s my review of this book-

The authors have so much enthusiasm for their topic that I truly wanted to write a positive review, but unfortunately their enthusiasm is the only redeeming quality of the book. True, you can learn some things about searching for gold with a metal detector. And although the authors disclaim any purpose to sell their products, they refer to them exclusively on the grounds that they are most familiar with them. Well, OK, but it still has an uncomfortable feel to it. And I felt I was unable to translate many of their instructions to generic terms (for use with any brand metal detector).

Early on you are advised that terms are defined in the glossary. But they should also be defined in the text so that one does not have to continually stop reading and refer to the glossary. This is basic to didactic writing. For example, the term “placer” is used many times before it is defined. Ground balancing (canceling) is treated the same way.

There are several passages that are repeated verbatim in different chapters and you are left wondering if you have somehow read the current chapter already! It appears that the editor of the book was in a great rush, or extremely inexperienced. I could not find any reference to RAM publications on the web. The editor was found, and seems to be mostly associated with the works of Garret and Lagal.

Was it worth the price? I suppose, as I at least felt the excitement of hunting for gold. But it would be better titled as a companion to one of the Garret manufactured metal detectors. I still hope to find a book on using the metal detector as a hobby that is a better-written “how to” book that speaks in generic terms about metal detectors. This is a great book if your using a Garrett Metal Detector.

The improvements in technology have corresponded inversely to the number of people using them. Metal detecting for gold as well as treasure has become very popular. Erosion during the past century has exposed millions of tons of virgin substrata for prospectors of today, and metal detectors will increase the chance of discovering new placers.

There’s no better expert on metal detector technology than Garrett. Great as those detectors are, they require some training to use them. Garrett provides the best ‘how-to’ advice available. His book will give you the straight-forward means to practice with it before you begin trekking into the canyons or sweeping old school yards for coins.

See Treasure Hunting Metal Detectors Below

Another story from the UK

Keith Bennett was using his metal detector on a Stratford farm owner’s field when his metal detector suddenly alerted him of a strong signal. This strong signal turned out to be over 1,400 Roman coins (or Denarii as they were called back in the day) dating back between 2006 BC to 195 BC! The coins have already been deemed “authentic treasure” which is good in case someone was trying to play a big practical joke on Mr. Bennett.

The silver Roman coins were stashed in a large pot (4 feet deep) that was broken on the top half. It seems as though the pot had been struck when the field was being plowed, causing a few coins to be scattered around the pot. Since this was a rather large collection of coins, it is possible that they could be tied to a wealthy land owner back in Emperor Augustus (or perhaps earlier) reign.

This treasure is expected to bring in tens and thousands of pounds, and Mr. Bennett supposedly allowed to keep half; I can only imagine the sensation of coming across such a historic find. As you can imagine he was quite stunned as you can reflect from his words:

“I just had an incredible feeling of history and going back in time. I felt a sense of connection with the person who buried these coins all those years ago. I wondered who they were and why they didn’t come back for it. It was brilliant – an experience everyone should have.”

Learn how to do it and you still mightn’t find gold treasure who knows, but you’ll certainly find the greatest treasure of them all: solitude.
